Losing the UK’s twentieth century building legacy – and sustainable ways to save and repurpose it

1.    Thousands of viable buildings are destroyed every year in the name of progress. The scale of such wastefulness is even more troubling as the world confronts climate change and the need for rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

This lecture examines why local ones have been lost – and how they could have been saved."

Following my lecture to the Portsmouth Society Don’t Waste Buildings when Ian and Deane were there and well known Kate Mackintosh spoke about her reuse plans for the Tricorn, I ‘ll be giving the lecture discussion again to the RIBA south conservation group on 17 July, and hopefully to FOOPA. It stimulated a lively debate among members, and I draw your attention to this RIBA event, and others about retrofit.

This isn’t just a local, but an international debate… and we do have experience of retrofit within the Society and city.
